SHOOTER / SINGLE-PLAYER DEMOS; SELF-HOSTED MULTIPLAYER
WebXash (Half-Life in the browser)
Half-Life in a browser tab on the Xash3D engine: the free Uplink, Day One and deathmatch demos start in a click; bring your own files for the full game or CS 1.6.
OUR TAKE / EDITORIAL
Why it's on the wall
Walking into the Black Mesa lobby from a browser tab is a jolt. Uplink is still one of the best free half hours in shooters.
Written by Neon Gamewall. An opinion, not a player rating.
GAME BRIEF
What's the game?
WebXash is a front end for the Xash3D FWGS engine compiled to WebAssembly. Pick a demo and it downloads and starts: Half-Life: Uplink (about 38 MB in all), Day One (about 87 MB) or the HLDM deathmatch demo (about 72 MB). If you own Half-Life or Counter-Strike 1.6 on Steam, you can point it at your game folder and play the full games and their mods.
BEFORE YOU PLAY
What to expect
Unofficial: Half-Life and Counter-Strike belong to Valve; the demos are Valve's free demo releases. Desktop only: its FAQ says you need a keyboard and mouse. No ads, chat or account. Multiplayer works only against servers you host yourself. The author says he wrote the front end, not the engine port. Open source on GitHub. No AI build claim.
Controls: Keyboard and mouse.
