The original Quake as online deathmatch: QuakeWorld on the FTE engine, the episode 1 maps and up to eight players.
OUR TAKE / EDITORIAL
Why it's on the wall
QuakeWorld netcode, brown castles and a nailgun: the 1996 deathmatch that started it all, in 24 MB.
Written by Neon Gamewall. An opinion, not a player rating.
GAME BRIEF
What's the game?
Pieter Levels' web Quake runs QuakeWorld on the FTE engine with the shareware data, so the maps are the start map and episode 1 (e1m1 to e1m8), played as deathmatch for up to eight. Twelve players were on when we checked. No account: type a name and play. The first load is about 24 MB, the lightest of his three Quakes.
BEFORE YOU PLAY
What to expect
Unofficial: the page calls itself a non-commercial fan project. Quake belongs to id Software and ZeniMax (Microsoft). Unlike mrdoob's Three.js Quake on the wall, which is the single-player shareware episode, this one is multiplayer. Open text chat with a banned-name filter only; the landing page asks for notification permission as it loads. A violent 1996 shooter. No AI build claim found for this one.
Controls: WASD and mouse, gamepad supported; on-screen touch controls on phones.
