SHOOTER / ONLINE, UP TO 8 WITH BOTS
Quake II (q2.pieter.com)
Quake II deathmatch online in the browser, which Pieter Levels says he made with AI: the classic DM maps, CTF and bots.
OUR TAKE / EDITORIAL
Why it's on the wall
The railgun on q2dm1 against a lobby of bots and strangers. Quake II's deathmatch has aged better than anyone remembers.
Written by Neon Gamewall. An opinion, not a player rating.
GAME BRIEF
What's the game?
Pieter Levels' web Quake II runs on the FTE engine with the free demo data plus the original deathmatch maps (q2dm1 to q2dm8), five capture-the-flag maps and Raist, a custom map by @javilopen. Up to eight players per server, topped up with bots. No account: type a name and play. The first load is about 81 MB.
BEFORE YOU PLAY
What to expect
Unofficial: the page calls itself a non-commercial fan project. Quake II belongs to id Software and ZeniMax (Microsoft). When we checked, six of the eight players on the server were bots. The text chat is open, with only a banned-name filter, and the landing page asks for notification permission as it loads. A violent 1997 shooter. The AI claim is Pieter's own post: he "made a web-based Quake 2 with Fable on fast mode".
Controls: WASD and mouse, gamepad supported; on-screen touch controls on phones.
