Quake III Arena (q3.pieter.com)
Online Quake III Arena deathmatch in a tab: type a name, press Play and frag whoever is on, The Longest Yard included.
OUR TAKE / EDITORIAL
Why it's on the wall
The Longest Yard, a rocket launcher and a server full of strangers, one click from the wall. Still the purest deathmatch there is.
Written by Neon Gamewall. An opinion, not a player rating.
GAME BRIEF
What's the game?
Pieter Levels (@levelsio) runs a public Quake III Arena server you join from the browser. The engine is Q3JS, ioquake3 compiled to WebAssembly by @lukathedev, and the maps are the free demo set: q3dm1, q3dm7, q3dm17 (The Longest Yard) and q3tourney2. No account: type a name and play. The first load is about 76 MB and is cached for next time.
BEFORE YOU PLAY
What to expect
Unofficial: the page calls itself a non-commercial fan project. Quake III Arena belongs to id Software and ZeniMax (Microsoft). About two dozen players were online when we checked. The text chat is open, with only a banned-name filter. The landing page asks for notification permission as soon as it loads (you can say no), and the game page loads Google Tag Manager. Fast, bloody 1999 deathmatch. Pieter credits the engine to Q3JS; no AI build claim for this one.
Controls: WASD and mouse, gamepad supported; on-screen touch controls on phones.
