OUR TAKE / EDITORIAL

Why it's on the wall

The browser game that keeps moving the line on what a tab can do: a quiet, real-feeling cockpit, and in five days it went from one F-16 over Las Vegas to three jets, a carrier launch, dogfights and a shared sky.

Written by Neon Gamewall. An opinion, not a player rating.

GAME BRIEF

What's the game?

VIPER 11 started as one F-16 climbing out of Nellis Air Force Base, and its creator keeps adding to it. The Hangar now has three jets, the F-16C Viper ('light and quick, a HUD'), the F-35C Lightning II ('heavy, a helmet display') and the F/A-18E Super Hornet ('twin engines, slow and stable'), and four places to fly from: Nellis AFB in the Las Vegas desert, built from real elevation data and aerial photographs, Hill AFB ('mountains and a salt lake'), NAS Key West ('coral key, turquoise shallows') and the carrier USS Carl Vinson at sea in the Pacific, where you catapult off the deck. Fly has five ways in. Multiplayer puts everyone in one sky: fight another player head-on, practise that fight against AI while you wait, or make a private room and send friends the link; mid-air collisions count. Solo is free flight on your own, at a base that changes every hour. Missions are a dogfight with a bandit that fights back and a night strike through the targeting pod. The Daily challenge gives everyone the same flight with no assists and three attempts a day, and the best one counts (on October 24, day 7, a golden-hour landing at Nellis). Training is the guided first flight, the approach, landing practice and a Pilot's Handbook. Leaderboards rank the week's best pilots, and every pilot has a callsign and a level.

BEFORE YOU PLAY

What to expect

Free, no ads and no account needed to fly; signing in only lets you make your own bobblehead or add photos. The page loads its own files and Vercel's analytics. When we looked on October 24 the menu counted 60 pilots online. It is not only a flight any more: the HUD has missile lock and shoot cues, and there are dogfights against AI and other players and a night strike. The creator's 'How it's made' notes explain the build: a six-degree-of-freedom F-16 flight model with simplified fly-by-wire, sky and far clouds from takram's open-source three.js libraries, ground from USGS elevation data and public aerial photographs, and a deliberately quiet cockpit of music, breathing in the mask and the radio, whose calls are ElevenLabs text-to-speech voices; we found no claim about how the rest was made. It plays on phones too, with touch controls: throttle under the left thumb, stick under the right, rudder pads, or tilt the phone to fly.

Controls: From the tutorial (checked October 19): T / G throttle, W / S pitch, A / D roll, Q / E rudder (it steers the nosewheel on the ground), B brakes, L gear, O time of day, N fly home (hold N for the autopilot), Enter skips a tutorial step; the mouse turns your head. Arrow keys and Enter work the menus. Gamepads work (RT / LT throttle, LB / RB rudder), and so do flight sticks, throttles and pedals: the creator's notes list Thrustmaster, Logitech, HOTAS Warthog and Saitek gear.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK

Common questions

Is there a free F-16 game you can play in a browser?

Yes. VIPER 11 at viperoneone.com is free with no download or account. You take an F-16 off runway 21L at Nellis Air Force Base and climb through the clouds; the Hangar also has the F-35C and the F/A-18E Super Hornet, and Hill AFB, NAS Key West and the carrier USS Carl Vinson to fly from.

Can you dogfight in VIPER 11?

Yes. Missions has a dogfight with a bandit that fights back, Multiplayer lets you fight another player head-on in one shared sky (or practise against AI while you wait), and the HUD has missile lock and shoot cues. There is also a night strike through the targeting pod.

Can you take off from an aircraft carrier in VIPER 11?

Yes. Pick USS Carl Vinson as your airport in the Hangar and you catapult off the deck at sea in the Pacific.

Can you fly VIPER 11 with a joystick or a HOTAS?

Yes. The creator's notes list flight sticks, throttles and rudder pedals read through the browser's Gamepad API, among them the Thrustmaster T.16000M, Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and HOTAS Warthog. Press a button on the stick first: browsers hide controllers until one is used.

Do you need to know how to fly?

No. Training has a guided first flight that teaches each control step by step and waits for you, plus approach and landing practice and a Pilot's Handbook.
