OUR TAKE / EDITORIAL

Why it's on the wall

The GameCube's tensest 60 seconds in a tab: tilt, roll, panic at the edge, try again. Only 8 MB, and Super Monkey Ball 2's stages sit in the same menu.

GAME BRIEF

What's the game?

A browser port of Super Monkey Ball built on the community's decompilation of the GameCube game. Singleplayer has Course Play, which starts from Floor 1, and Practice, which repeats any stage you pick. The Game Source menu switches between Super Monkey Ball 1, Super Monkey Ball 2 (Challenge and Story modes) and an SMB2 variant called MB2WS, across Beginner, Advanced, Expert, the Extra courses and Master. We started SMB1's Beginner course: the camera swept over Floor 1, READY flashed, and holding forward rolled the ball down the checkered track, through the bananas, to GOAL!! with 51 seconds left. Online Multiplayer lists public lobbies, joins private rooms by code and hosts rooms of 2 to 16 players, in Standard or Chained Together mode, with player collision, infinite time and chat. Replays save to a local library, and custom stage packs load from a zip file or a folder.

BEFORE YOU PLAY

What to expect

Unofficial: Super Monkey Ball was made by Amusement Vision and published by SEGA, which did not make or license this port, so it could disappear if SEGA objects. The Credits menu names TwilightPB for the port, ComplexPlane for the renderer, camthesaxman for the SMB1 decompilation, ComplexPlane, CraftedCart, EELI, Eucalyptus and The BombSquad for the SMB2 decompilation, and the SMB Custom Level Community for tools. Free, no account and no ads that we saw; the page uses Cloudflare's visitor analytics and links TwilightPB's Ko-fi and a Discord. About 8 MB had downloaded by the time we cleared Floor 1. No AI build claim.

Controls: WASD or the arrow keys tilt the stage, R resets the stage and N skips it. The menu says a plugged-in controller should work too. Settings has gyro tilt and a virtual joystick for phones; we played on a computer and have not tested them.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK

Common questions

Can you play Super Monkey Ball in a browser?

Yes. A fan port at monkeyball-online.pages.dev runs the 2001 GameCube game in a tab, built on the community's decompilation, with nothing to install and no account. Choose Singleplayer, Course Play and Start Course to begin at Floor 1. It is unofficial, not a SEGA release.

Is Super Monkey Ball 2 in it?

Its stages are: the Game Source menu has Super Monkey Ball 2 with Challenge and Story modes, built on a separate SMB2 decompilation, plus a variant called MB2WS. We played SMB1's Beginner course.

Can you play Super Monkey Ball online with friends?

Yes. Online Multiplayer lists public lobbies, and you can host a room for 2 to 16 players and share its room code, with a Chained Together mode and chat. We have not played a match online.

How big is the download?

About 8 MB by the end of Floor 1, measured in Chrome.
